PULSE | Alva Gallagher - Launching October 17th 2023 at City Quay Dublin by The Lord Mayor of Dublin
Pulse is a new public sculpture for the Dublin Urban landscape commissioned by Failte Ireland and Dublin City Council under the Dublin City Docklands Light Commission following an International Call. Pulse by visual artist Alva Gallagher is a fully immersive public sculpture piece that has evolved from a vision of the Dublin Docklands as a steady moving entity, of life in motion. It synchronises elements of the night sky with descriptive attributes of this unique quayside location. A manifestation of marine and urban tidal movements created by human activity. 'Icescapes' a new body of work stimulated by multiple research trips to Lake Abraham and Lake Minnewanka, Alberta.
This work involves a unique exploration of the textures and depths of the evolving thaw within the unique and stunning Rocky Mountain landscape. These ice pool portals draw the viewer in to explore the inner depths of the freezing waters through their delicate frozen layers, documenting the winter’s ice melt timeline, these details are studied to document our constantly evolving and thriving natural environment that has sustained us in all manner through such discerning times.
Solo Exhibition August 11th - 31st 2017
Catherine Hammond Gallery, Skibbereen, West Cork, Ireland

Sculptor Alva Gallagher is recognised as one of Ireland's preeminent artists working with glass. She is a sculptor whose work involves a continuous exploration of oceanic movements and elements. The dual qualities of ferocity and calmness of the sea are reflected in the fluidity, solidity and transparency of the glass, metals and concrete she works with. In particular, she has been inspired by living in the Canadian arctic for months at a time.

She is fascinated with the continuous rhythm of the ocean and the elements, the night’s sky, the sea’s depths, and the translucence of water and ice. Here, using cast crystal, concrete and steel, she explores coastal segments carved by lunar and tidal movements, constellations in the sky above and their corresponding ocean depths below.
